Come say goodbye to a VERY special friend.
“It’s not Old Skool, It’s not New Skool…..It’s Tru Skool!!!!†Was a phrase Mickey recited on the stage at God’s in the late night, near morning while holding a bottle of Asti enough times that it is a cherished memory to those of us that came to love him and what Tru Skool meant to him. Tru Skool was a staple in so many of our lives during the years that Mickey literally ate, drank and “barely†slept it. Not only because the parties were fun and the music was amazing, but because Mickey made us all feel a part of it. It became a family to many of us. The walls of the now deceased God’s Basement (RIP) saw it’s fair share of regular party shenanigans (raise your hand if you’ve ever seen Mickey carry an asshole by the throat, or watched him make a deal with the Fire or Police Departments not to shut the doors on us, or the legendary stray, feral dog he held hostage in the bread truck all night so it didn’t attack the guests) but it was also a place where Mickey introduced one friend to another and another and you randomly danced next to a person who you might never have met under any other circumstance and became life long friends. When Mickey asked you to work or help, you were honored. When he gave his “Before the party starts speech†(Please, Thank you, excuse me and I’m sorry because if you try to get my attention during the party I will most likely be an asshole. It’s not personal.) we understood. In those days, the parties weren’t just a party to him. So much thought and dedication went into the planning, when the doors opened, every second counted to him and it showed. Tru Skool was about the music, about friends making memories that will make us smile until we’re old and gray. Let’s give respect where respect is due and send Mickey off with a smile to start his next chapter in life together. Class is dismissed.”
